In Memoriam: Pope Francis (1936–2025)

What His Legacy Means for the Church—And Your Upcoming Trip to Rome

On Easter Monday, 2025, the world bid farewell to one of the most beloved and progressive leaders of the modern Catholic Church. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of humility, inclusivity, and bold reform.

While the Vatican adjusts to this profound transition, so too must travelers. Whether you’re planning to visit the Vatican in the coming weeks or simply want to understand the significance of this moment, here’s what to know—about the man, the moment, and what comes next.

A Papacy That Changed the Church

Pope Francis was the first Jesuit, the first South American, and the first pope to choose the name Francis—an homage to Saint Francis of Assisi and a signal of his commitment to simplicity and service. His papacy marked a clear shift in tone and focus for the Catholic Church.

Progressive Stances That Defined His Legacy:

  • Environmental Stewardship – His 2015 encyclical Laudato si’ called for urgent action on climate change.
  • Inclusion – He extended compassion to LGBTQ+ individuals and the divorced, emphasizing dialogue over judgment.
  • Economic Equality – A vocal critic of global inequality, he often highlighted the struggles of the poor and marginalized.
  • Modernization and Openness – Though rooted in tradition, he encouraged open discussions on topics such as celibacy and women’s roles in the Church.

Even those outside the Catholic faith recognized Pope Francis for his deep humanity and moral clarity—qualities that made him one of the most admired global leaders of his time.

What’s Happening Now at the Vatican?

Currently, Pope Francis lies in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, where mourners are welcome to pay their respects ahead of his funeral on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Until then, access to the basilica is limited to those participating in the vigil.

What to expect in the days ahead:

    • Restricted Access at St. Peter’s – General visiting hours are expected to resume after the funeral, but travelers should monitor Vatican announcements for confirmation.
    • Changes to Tours – Most guided tours of the Vatican are proceeding as usual, though access to the Sistine Chapel will be suspended during the upcoming conclave period (more below).

What Is the Conclave—and How Does It Work?

The conclave is the sacred process through which a new pope is elected. It will begin in the coming weeks, once preparations are finalized.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Cardinals will gather in the Sistine Chapel, where they are secluded from the outside world until a decision is reached.

    • After each round of voting, ballots are burned in a special stove. White smoke signals a successful election; black smoke means more voting is needed.

    • Once a new pope is chosen, he appears on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, greeted by the faithful gathered in the square below.

During the conclave, the Sistine Chapel will be closed to the public, but Vatican Museums and other tours will remain open.
